If insects or termites have infested your home, the only way to remove them may be to have the place fumigated. Professional pest control contractors should perform the fumigation. Before the contractors arrive, it is essential that you take the following steps.

Evacuate family and pets

Because hazardous chemicals are used during the fumigation process, the house will need to be completely empty. This means you will need to find somewhere for the rest of your family and pets to go to while the pest control company does its work. Great places are the houses of friends and family. If this isn't possible, you will need to arrange a hotel and pet boarding.

Remove any unsealed food from the house

The gas used to fumigate your house will cover every surface and will enter areas which are not sealed. If you have opened food which is being stored in a cupboard or fridge, this will need to be removed or thrown away before the pest control people begin work. Food which has not been opened from its sealed container or packet will be okay.

Remove any houseplants

Houseplants will also be affected by the chemicals used to kill termites and insects. If you want your houseplants to survive, you will need to remove them from your property. The best way to do this is to ask neighbours to look after them. If this isn't possible, you should place the house plants in a shady spot away from the house and ensure that they are adequately watered.

Move your car from the driveway

When the pest control contractors arrive, they will need a place to set up their equipment and to park their truck. The best place to do this is in a location close to your house. If you have a driveway, you should move your car so that the pest control contractors can easily access your home while operating their equipment.

Turn off the air conditioning

Your home air conditioning unit circulates air around your home and expels heat from the interior of your property to the exterior. If your air con unit is on during the fumigation process, this could result in hazardous chemicals exiting your home via the AC ventilation system. You should ensure that your air conditioning unit is switched off before the pest control company arrives.
